Situated up in the Caprivi in Northern Namibia, this must be one of the most beautiful places that we have worked. This facility, built for the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources is set to produce both indigenous tilapia and catfish for supply to rural pond aquaculture. It’s a facility that is set to benefit the local economy and assist in improving the food security in the surrounding area.
We start in the mighty Kavango river with a floating pump station, delivering water to the settlement pond just beyond the reaches of the flooding river. Water is then pumped through to various hatchery buildings where broodstock and the subsequent juvenile phases of tilapia and catfish are reared.
There is also a small experimental aquarium where many of the species seen in the Okavango Delta can be viewed by visiting students.
